The Femtosecond laser and the Excimer laser

We have been using the new Zeiss excimer Laser MEL 90 since february 2014. Unique product qualities like the FLEXIQUENCE switch function (250 Hz / 500 Hz), the ablation profile Triple-A and the outstanding intra-operative ablation speed of up to 1.3 seconds per diopter create entirely new treatment prospects.

Contrary to the “classic” LASIK, where the corneal flap is created with a mechanical blade (microkeratome) the Femtosecond laser creates a corneal flap by means of ultra short laser pulses.

As in the case of the “classic” LASIK, the vision defect is corrected using an Excimer laser which is designed to ablate the cornea at the desired spot . At the end of the operation, the corneal flap is replaced without stitches and will remain in position by “suction” effect.

The corneal flaps created by the femtosecond laser are more precise than those created by a mechanical microkeratome. Since the cornea is reduced by a few thousandths of millimetres, the femtosecond laser presents a big advantage in relation to the “classic” laser.

We use the Femtosecond "Visumax" and the Excimer "MEL90" laser of the Zeiss company:

Visumax Femtosecond Laser
MEL90 Excimer Laser

At our clinic, each Femto Lasik is guided by an aberrometric treatment.
